Born in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 3, 1911, Harlean Carpenter grew up from the age of ten in the Los Angeles home of her maternal grandfather. She left private school in Lake Forest, Illinois, at sixteen to be married and settled in Beverly Hills, California. In 1928 she was persuaded to register with the Central Casting Bureau in Hollywood, and soon, under the name Jean Harlow (Harlow was her mother╒s maiden name), she was playing small parts in short films, many of them silent comedies directed by Hal Roach. Her first screen credit was in a Laurel and Hardy comedy, Double Whoopee, in 1928. After a small role in The Saturday Night Kid with Clara Bow, 1929, she was chosen by Howard Hughes to star in his Hell╒s Angels, 1930, in which she was an immediate sensation.
A rapid succession of movies followed╤among them Platinum Blonde, 1931, The Secret Six, 1931, Public Enemy, 1931, Iron Man, 1931, The Beast of the City, 1932, and Red Dust, 1932╤all designed to exploit Harlow╒s worldly-wise manner and her striking, frankly sensual beauty. The design was enormously successful, and despite her lack of dramatic ability Harlow became, virtually overnight, one of Hollywood╒s top box-office attractions. Her often daring wardrobe, her enticing languor alternating with a wisecracking, sardonic humor, and her platinum blonde hair were all, with varying degrees of success, widely copied. In Red-Headed Woman, 1932, she displayed a knack for light comedy in a script by Anita Loos, and thereafter she concentrated on such roles, notably in Dinner at Eight, 1933, Bombshell, 1933, Hold Your Man, 1933, Reckless, 1934, China Seas, 1935, Libeled Lady, 1936, and Personal Property, 1936. Her last years were marked by unhappy marriages and serious bouts of illness. She died in Los Angeles on June 7, 1937, at the age of twenty-six. Her last film, Saratoga, was released a month later.
